Ah, emoticons. Our users tell us they love these irresistible little animated images. It’s true, they do add an element of fun, and they help convey sentiments often difficult to articulate in words. But while they’re popular in personal messages, when (and how) do emoticons fit into business communications?

Here are a few guidelines I follow in my Skype instant messages – perhaps these can help you decide how you’ll use emoticons at work:

1. Relationship status: I use emoticons most often with colleagues I know well and interact with regularly, like co-workers I see daily or long-time clients.  Emoticons suggest casualness and intimacy so, depending on your company culture, it might make sense to hold off on using them with new colleagues or anyone with whom you have a more formal relationship (like your company president).
2. Frequency: I use them sparingly; I try to limit myself to one or two emoticons in any chat session. When in doubt, spell it out.
3. Tone: I use emoticons to express more positive sentiments than negative ones. If I’m telling a co-worker that a project isn’t delivering results, adding an emoticon – like a frowning face —  may suggest I don’t take the situation seriously.

I wanted to call out a few lesser-known emoticons that might be helpful in some business contexts:

1. Call: Can let a colleague know that you propose continuing the conversation on a call

How could we resist? We came across “The Skype Song” and just had to get in touch with its creator. Today we’d like to introduce you to singer-songwriter Cynthia Wang, the artist behind “The Skype Song” and her recently released EP album.

Q: Nice to meet you Cynthia, and thank you for your time. Could you please share a little background on your musical career?

I started playing classical piano from a very young age, and I played oboe and sax in the school band so music was already a big part of my life. In college, I couldn’t fit a piano into my dorm room, and my dad got me a guitar for Christmas, so I thought, why the heck not? I spent most of my senior year in college teaching myself guitar, getting tips from my friends who already played, and learning how to play songs that I liked. I also started writing one or two songs then as well.

When I started graduate school, music took a bit of a back seat. I lived in NYC and didn’t have a car; lugging my guitar in its hard shell case was just…a huge pain, so I didn’t play as much as I would have liked. I’m currently finishing my PhD and working on various other projects. While all of this keeps me pretty busy, it also amazingly gives me a lot of flexibility in terms of my time.

Q: What is the story behind the Skype Song?

I was in a long distance relationship living in Los Angeles, and my girlfriend at the time was in the Philippines. We completely lived on Skype. We were on Skype 18 hours a day or something. Because of the time difference, we would just leave Skype on for hours and, uh, rather creepily, watch each other sleep. I think the longest we were on Skype for was over 30 hours, but I’m sure that record had been broken somewhere. Skype really became a way of life, and the fact that Skype was an app on our phones was amazing. It was nice to feel like I could carry her around in my pocket wherever I went. That’s where the Skype Song comes from.

My EP album is a collaboration between me and my friend, Barry Neely, who produced and orchestrated it. And while we’re at it, I have to give a quick shout-out to Jennifer Liu, the violinist in “The Skype Song”; Kenneth Ronquillo, whose artwork is just amazing — he did the album cover in just two days; Adam Hanson, who did all the drums and percussion on the album, and Alfa Garcia, who is an inspiration and amazing singer-songwriter who lent us her glockenspiel.

Q: Has there been a time where a Skype session led to a special or memorable moment?

My family moved to Hong Kong a few years ago. On my dad’s birthday one year, my brother went over to celebrate with my parents, and they video called me in. I watched them eat this delicious dinner that they described to me in excruciating detail, sang happy birthday while my dad blew out the candles on the cake, watched as they cut the cake and proclaim how amazing the cake tasted…. and I was there sitting at home barely having had dinner… but really, it was an awesome celebration and thanks to Skype I was able to join in.

Q: Craziest thing done on Skype?

Hah — Aside from the obvious, erm, non-G-rated activities, which I’m totally not admitting to doing here, I think the coolest thing I’ve done on Skype is doing guest lectures, teaching undergraduate classes as part of my PhD program. Just this past summer, I had two of my friends guest lecture for my Communication Technology and Culture class. Both of them lived on the east coast, and thankfully our classrooms are equipped with Skype. It really felt like they were in the room with us.

As for myself, I did a guest lecture via Skype for my friend’s class at Uppsala University in Sweden. Thank you Skype for enabling transcontinental and international flows of knowledge and education in real time.

Q: Favorite emoticon?

I’m really boring. I like the big smiley one a lot. And sunglasses. Because I like to pretend I’m all cool and stuff.

It’s always nice to hear about people using video calling in inventive and heartwarming ways. We knew people loved using Skype, but to have a song written about us is something else.

Here are a few highlights from this past year.

New ways to get together

One year ago this week, we announced the public preview of Skype Translator, helping to open up a whole new chapter in global communication. With the latest update, Skype Translator currently provides real-time voice translation in Chinese Mandarin, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese, as well as over 50 IM languages, on the Windows desktop app.

With the goal of breaking down communication barriers even further, a new and easier way to start conversations was launched: you can now invite anyone to join a group chat by sharing a unique link. And thanks to the worldwide availability of Skype for Web (Beta), participants can now easily join in straight from their browser.

Another highlight of 2015 was making Skype more intuitive and seamless for our millions of users with the complete makeover of Skype for Android, iPhone and iPad. It paid off, and we’re honored to have been selected as one of the “Best Apps of 2015” on the Google Play Store.

New ways to express yourself

We’ve introduced a new “love-themed” tab for this special time of year featuring our best romance-inspired Mojis and emoticons. Included among them is a brand new set of Mojis, featuring custom compositions by the legendary Sir Paul McCartney, to help you express different forms of love through music.

Not in a particularly loving mood? If you’re using Skype on Android and iOS you can now search for Mojis and emoticons related to other specific emotions making sharing how you’re feeling even easier.

Share a video card

Record a special Valentine’s Day video message with floating hearts to help set the mood. You can then share the video message over Skype, or other social networks such as Facebook, or email.

On iPhones and iPads, open Skype and tap on the heart to get started.

On Android phones, tap the “+” button on the lower right, then select the heart.

You can also call anyone, regardless of where they are or what type of device they are using, by making Skype calls to mobiles and landlines around the world at low calling rates.

Spart Zeit mit Skype, wenn ihr an einer E-Mail an einen Freund sitzt, um Pläne zu schmieden, öffnet einfach den Chat neben der E-Mail und verkürzt die Planungszeit. Die neue verbesserte Integration von Skype auf Outlook.com , die wir vor einigen Monaten angekündigt haben, steht nun für alle Outlook.com Benutzer zur Verfügung.

Salam, Skype Translator spricht jetzt Arabisch

Seit seiner Einführung im Dezember 2014, hat der Skype Translator es einfacher gemacht, Beziehungen und Kontakte über Sprachbarrieren hinweg zu gestalten. Und wir freuen uns, über den nächsten Schritt die Menschen einander noch näher zu bringen. Der Skype Translator versteht nun auch Arabisch als gesprochene Sprache.

Jede Veröffentlichung einer neuen Sprache für den Skype Translator war sehr wichtig für uns – bringt es uns doch einen Schritt näher an den Abbau der Sprachbarrieren für Menschen auf der ganzen Welt. Menschliche Beziehungen sind der Kern von allem, was wir bei Skype tun.

Die arabische Sprache ist uns besonders wichtig, weil die arabischsprachige Bevölkerung so vielfältig ist und auf der ganzen Welt angetroffen werden kann. Die Fähigkeit, mit anderen in ihrer eigenen Sprache zu kommunizieren, hat das Potenzial, Beziehungen aufzubauen und zu festigen. Zum Beispiel können jüngere Generationen, die eine andere Sprache sprechen, mit ihrer Familie kommunizieren; neu gebildet und migrierte Familien sind in der Lage, mit der Familie und Freunden zu Hause in Verbindung zu bleiben; Bildungseinrichtungen können den großen Pool an Wissen zwischen den Kulturen erschließen.

Es gibt viele Szenarien, in denen der Skype Translator die Kommunikation verbessern kann. Auf Reisen, in der Ausbildung, bei gemeinnützigen Einrichtungen – den Möglichkeiten sind keine Grenzen gesetzt.

Genauer gesagt haben wir das Hocharabisch (MSA) veröffentlicht, das im Nahen Osten und in Nordafrika als Standardform der arabischen Sprache verwendet wird. Anders als Dialekte, die stark von Land zu Land variieren können, wird MSA im gesamten arabischen Raum in der schriftlichen und formalen Kommunikation verwendet. Das Hocharabisch wird in den Schulen gelehrt und zum Beispiel von Journalisten verwendet.

Skype Translator bietet jetzt acht Sprachen: Englisch, Spanisch, Französisch, Deutsch, Chinesisch (Mandarin), Italienisch, Portugiesisch (Brasilien), und natürlich, Arabisch. Dies wird von mehr als 50 geschriebenen Sprachen begleitet, die wir unterstützen. So könnt ihr mit anderen Menschen auf der ganzen Welt schreiben, auch wenn sie nicht die gleiche Sprache sprechen.

Ihr findet die arabische Sprache in den Einstellungen über das Globus-Symbol. Es gibt ein Drop-Down-Menü, über das ihr den Skype Translator starten, sowie eure Sprachen auswählen könnt.

Skype for Web – ruft jetzt auf Handys und Festnetz an, plus einiges mehr

Im vergangenen Jahr brachten wir eine Web–Version von Skype heraus, die euch an einer Skype Konversation teilnehmen lässt – von jedem Computer aus. Skype for Web ist großartig, egal ob ihr einen Computer verwendet, auf dem Skype noch nicht installiert ist, oder ihr es gerade vorzieht, die Web-Version anstelle der App zu verwenden.

Wir haben auf euch gehört und uns auf die wichtigsten Dinge konzentriert. Hier ist, was wir so gemacht haben:

1. Ruft Mobil- und Festnetztelefone direkt über Skype an zu günstigen Konditionen:

Wir haben Skype for Web aktualisiert, sodass ihr jetzt bei Anrufen zu Mobiltelefone und Festnetz Geld sparen könnt. Alles, was ihr braucht, ist ein wenig Skype-Guthaben oder ein Abonnement um günstige internationale Anrufe über Skype zu führen. Sobald ihr euch bei Skype for Web angemeldet habt, klickt ihr einfach auf den Anruf Tab, wählt euren Zielort aus, gebt die Nummer ein die ihr anrufen möchtet und klickt dann die Anruftaste.

2. Schaut YouTube-Videos ohne Skype verlassen zu müssen

Wir haben vor Kurzem die Vorschau für Links in Skype for Web verbessert, nun werden auch Vorschaubilder der Webseite gezeigt. Außerdem könnt ihr nun ein YouTube-Video direkt in Skype anschauen, wenn euch jemand einen Link schickt. Ihr erhaltet die gleichen Lautstärke und Vollbild-Steuerelemente, die ihr auf YouTube habt, aber ihr braucht kein neues Browserfenster öffnen, um das Video zu sehen – es wird direkt in Skype abgespielt.

3. Fügt weitere Personen zu einem Gespräch hinzu, auch wenn sie Skype nicht nutzen

Eines der spannendsten Features, dass vor Kurzem für Windows-Desktop-Nutzer von Skype gestartet ist, ist eine neue Möglichkeit, Menschen zu einem Skype-Chat hinzuzufügen. Diese Funktion steht jetzt auch bei Skype for Web bereit. Ihr könnt einen Chat mit jeden beginnen, klickt dazu einfach auf das +Neu und dann auf “Link teilen”. Ihr bekommt eine einzigartige Gesprächs-URL, die ihr mit anderen teilen könnt. Und jeder, der die URL anklickt, kann an eurem Chat teilnehmen – es ist einfach perfekt, um Leute, die noch kein Skype-Kontakt sind, zu einem Chat einzuladen. Das Beste daran, ihr müsst euch keine Sorgen machen, ob der Eingeladene bereits Skype verwendet, weil er an dem Gespräch als Gast teilnehmen kann, schnell und einfach über Skype for Web. Probiert es aus und ladet jemanden zu einem Gespräch über Skype ein.

4. Verpasst nie wieder ein Gespräch

Wir haben bei Skype for Web Benachrichtigungen eingeführt. So könnt ihr keine wichtige Nachricht mehr verpassen, oder einen Anruf oder wenn ein Freund euch ein Bild seiner Kitten schickt. Solange ihr bei Skype for Web angemeldet seid, erhaltet ihr die Benachrichtigungen, auch wenn ihr in einem anderen Browser-Tab oder einer anderen App seid.

Wir freuen uns sehr, über die ganzen Neuerrungen für Skype for Web die eure Erfahrungen noch besser machen werden. Versorgt uns auch weiterhin mit eurem Feedback und haltet die Augen offen für weitere Updates in den nächsten Wochen und Monaten – es gibt noch einiges, was da kommen wird. Skype Universal-Windows-Plattform-App-Preview für Windows 10 kommt zu Windows-Insider

In den kommenden Wochen werden wir die erste Version der Skype-Universal-Windows-Platform-Preview-App in Windows-Insider zum Testen bereitstellen. Ihr wundert euch vielleicht, was dies für euch und Skype für Windows 10 bedeutet. Seit November haben wir das Feedback zur Consumer Preview der Skype-Integration für Windows 10 gesammelt. Die Integration von Skype in Windows 10 ermöglicht es uns, euch noch schneller Zugang zu den Skype Funktionen zu geben. Wir nutzten das mobile Paradigma mit einer App pro Aufgabe, wie die Telefon-App, Karten App und so weiter. Vor diesem Hintergrund veröffentlichten wir integrierte, aufgabenorientierte Apps. Dieser Ansatz funktioniert gut in der Forschung: Menschen sahen den Mehrwert der Single-Modus-Anwendungen, die eine geringer Last verursachten und schneller zur Verfügung stehen.

Aber, was wir auch aus eurem Feedback gelernt haben, ist, dass die Bildschirme immer größer werden – durch große Tablets, 2 in 1 PCs etc. – das Nutzerverhalten sich verändert und die meisten Nutzer weniger Apps nutzen möchten. Und dadurch wünschten sich immer mehr eine App, die euch alles machen lässt, in nur einem Fenster. Dies ist der Grund, warum wir die Skype Universal-Windows-Plattform-App entwickeln.

Wir wollten von der Integration lernen und die derzeitige Skype-App dadurch verbessern. Wir haben das Aussehen und die Bedienung vereinfacht, indem doppelte und unnötige Menüs entfernt wurden und so Verwechslungen verhindert werden. Die globalen Menüs sind nun in einem neuen, einzigen Menü und schon in der kommenden Version werden kontextbezogene Menüs erscheinen.

Also, was ist in dieser Version? Sie umfasst die folgende beliebte Funktionalität:

• Meldet euch mit eurem Microsoft-Konto an und verknüpft es mit einer Skype-ID
• Zeigt und ändert euren Status
• Eine Liste eurer vorhandenen Skype-Kontakte
• Startet einen Chat mit jemand in eurer Kontaktliste

Wir haben die Tablet UI von Grund auf neu gestaltet, und eine Reihe von Materialdesign inspirierten Elementen hinzugefügt. Die neue Floating-Aktionstaste (FAB) macht es schneller, Nachrichten zu senden und Sprach- und Videoanrufe mit Freunden oder Gruppen zu starten – alles aus dem Hauptbildschirm der App heraus. Die FAB ändert eure Skype Erfahrung dynamisch und gibt euch einen schnellen Zugriff auf wichtige Funktionen wie Nachrichten, Sprach-, Videoanrufe und Skype-Bots.

Multitasking Funktionen – das neue Design für Tablets macht Multitasking einfacher, da es mit einer Multi-Fenster Ansicht kommt, wenn das Tablet im Querformat genutzt wird. Dreht einfach euer Gerät und ihr werdet in der Lage sein, Nachrichten, Dateien zu senden und einen Blick in andere Gespräche werfen – alles während ihr in einem Video- oder Sprachanruf seid.

Tara Cappel has a passion for travel.

So much so that she started her own travel company called For The Love Of Travel to make it easier for busy, career-oriented young people to experience the mind-opening benefits of travel while still having a full-time job.

Where it all began – Tara’s first job in tourism was selling tours of the Coliseum in Rome, Italy

“Travel and the breadth of experiences that come with it have had a major impact on me and how I see the world. You realize a lot about the world and about yourself when you leave your comfort zone and I think it’s really important for young people to observe different cultures to be able to participate in a broader global dialogue.”

“I also loved the idea of group trips because I think in this digital age, we often hide behind our computer or phone screens and miss out on many opportunities to meet new people. But from travel, I know that your world opens up exponentially with each person you meet. It’s, in my opinion, the most important aspect of travel, which is why connection is so important to us as a company.”

She first began using Skype to keep in contact with friends and family from home while she was traveling, and with friends she’d met abroad.

“It doesn’t seem SO far away when loved ones can picture where you are. When I lived in Italy, I used Skype to show my mom around my apartment and I know it really helped her with the distance. It’s also super fun to use Skype to reconnect with international friends I haven’t seen for a while. Obviously you can keep in touch with other social media but there’s something special about being able to talk face-to-face in real time.”

Her personal experience with Skype led her to consider it as a great tool for her company and the travel industry. She uses Skype with a lot of her international vendors, and finds it very personal. In fact, she almost always suggests a Skype call when meeting a vendor for the first time, since she believes it’s much easier to speak via video than over email.

“I find Skype video calling to be super important for the first meeting, regardless of the language barrier because it helps establish a more personal relationship. Also, in the tourism industry, at least where we are currently operating, English is pretty universal so most people we work with speak it well. It’s so easy to connect, and lots of people use it so it’s just easier than dealing with country codes and uncertain roaming fees. Skype Credit comes in really handy in this case too. And I love that it automatically adds $10 worth of credit when I’m running low so I don’t have to go through the process of adding credit manually every time.”

Her team also uses Skype when designing their unique, well-rounded itineraries that include major attractions, but focus more on authentic cultural experiences. To accomplish that, they put hours and hours of time into planning each trip and work closely with local suppliers.

“I use Skype in the planning phase to “see” places like hotels or restaurants I can’t go to in person because it is more accurate than pictures that can be staged and edited,” says Tara.

In addition to video calls, Tara also uses instant messaging to communicate with colleagues and vendors and to set up meetings.

“It’s a nice way to communicate because you can see when they’re typing as if you’re texting each other, which feels more personal than email. And you can use emoticons! I LOVE the Skype emoticons. They’re so full of personality. If I had to pick a favorite, I would say the nodding guy (nod). And then the wait! one… (wait)”

Tara has two other favorite Skype features: Skype WiFi on which she relies heavily—and for her, it’s been a life-saver, since there are more than 2 million hotspot locations across the globe–and screen sharing. She finds the screen share feature especially helpful because the company’s graphic designer is in Denver but For The Love Of Travel is based out of Los Angeles.

“I’m annoyingly particular when it comes to design so we use Skype screen share to work on editing together instead of sending 100 versions back and forth,” she explains. “It saves a lot of time and email storage space. There is literally no other effective way I know of to look at someone else’s computer if you’re not right next to them!”

While Tara already speaks Italian and French (and basic German), she’s intrigued by Skype Translator which she hasn’t had need to use yet, but is considering for future ventures.

“It sounds amazing! I can’t wait to try it out.”

For Tara, it remains incredibly important for young people to observe different cultures to be able to participate in a broader global dialogue.

“It’s super hard to plan international travel with friends and not everyone is comfortable going abroad solo. At the same time, group tours are notorious for having a very scripted, touristy feel and that just doesn’t appeal to my generation,” says Tara. “So I set out to design trips that introduce people to a culture rather than just sprinting down a tourist track. I want people to feel like they’re really absorbing a culture even if they only have a week to explore it.”

We’re so glad Skype is helping her company do just that!

Diese ist so groß, dass sie ihr eigenes Reiseunternehmen gründete – For The Love Of Travel. Das Ziel ist es, karriereorientierten jungen Menschen es einfacher zu machen, eine Reise zu erfahren, die den Horizont erweitert – das alles während sie einen Vollzeit Job haben.

“Reisen und die verschiedenen Erfahrungen, die mit ihnen einhergingen, hatten einen großen Einfluss auf mich und wie ich die Welt sehe. Man lernt eine Menge über die Welt und über sich selbst, wenn man die Komfortzone verlässt. Ich denke, dass es wirklich wichtig ist für junge Menschen, verschiedene Kulturen beobachten zu können, um sich an einem globalen Dialog beteiligen zu können.”

“Ich liebte auch die Idee der Gruppenreisen, weil ich denke, dass wir uns in diesem digitalen Zeitalter zu oft hinter unserem Computer oder Handy verstecken und dabei die Möglichkeit verpassen, neue Leute zu treffen. Aber durch das Reisen weiß ich, dass die Welt sich exponentiell mit jeder Person, die man trifft, öffnet. Es ist, meiner Meinung nach, der wichtigste Aspekt einer Reise, weshalb Kontakte, für uns als Unternehmen, so wichtig sind.”

Zunächst begann sie über Skype mit Freunden und der Familie in Kontakt zu bleiben, während sie unterwegs war. Natürlich nutzt sie es auch, um mit Freunden von früheren Reisen in Kontakt zu bleiben.

“Es wirkt nicht SO weit weg, wenn die Liebsten sich vorstellen können, wo man ist. Als ich in Italien lebte, nutzte ich Skype, um meiner Mutter meine Wohnung zu zeigen, und ich weiß, es half ihr wirklich über die Entfernung hinweg. Es macht auch ziemlich viel Spaß Skype zu nutzen, um mit Freunden auf der ganzen Welt zu sprechen, die man seit einiger Zeit nicht mehr gesehen hat. Natürlich kann man über andere soziale Medien in Kontakt bleiben, aber es ist etwas Besonderes mit den anderen in Echtzeit und von Angesicht zu Angesicht zu sprechen.”

Ihre persönliche Erfahrung mit Skype führte dazu, dass sie es als ein wichtiges Werkzeug für ihr Unternehmen und die Reisebranche sieht. Sie nutzt Skype mit vielen ihrer internationalen Anbietern und findet es sehr persönlich. Tatsächlich schlägt sie fast immer einen Skype-Anruf vor, wenn sie einen Anbieter zum ersten Mal trifft. Sie findet, dass es viel einfacher ist, mit jemanden per Video zu sprechen als über E-Mail.

“Ich finde, dass ein Skype-Videoanruf für das erste Treffen super wichtig ist, unabhängig von der Sprachbarriere, da es hilft, eine persönliche Beziehung zu etablieren. Ferner, ist Englisch in der Tourismusbranche, zumindest in dem Bereich in dem wir arbeiten, gängige Praxis und die meisten Leute sprechen es ziemlich gut. Es ist so einfach in Kontakt zu treten, und viele Leute verwenden es bereits. Es ist so einfach leichter, als mit Ländercodes und unbekannten Roaming-Gebühren zu tun zu haben. Skype Guthaben ist in diesem Fall wirklich praktisch. Und ich liebe es, dass automatisch ein Wert von 10 $ Guthaben hinzufügt wird, wenn mein Guthaben zu Neige geht. So muss ich nicht jedes Mal den Prozess durchlaufen um Guthaben manuell hinzuzufügen.”

Ihr Team nutzt Skype auch, wenn es um die Gestaltung von gut gestalteten Routen geht, die zu den Hauptattraktionen führen, aber sich zeitgleich auf authentische kulturelle Erfahrungen konzentrieren. Um das zu erreichen, investieren sie Stunde um Stunde in die Planung jeder Reise und arbeiten dabei eng mit den lokalen Anbietern zusammen.

“Ich nutze Skype in der Planungsphase um Orte wie Hotels oder Restaurants zu “sehen”, in die ich nicht persönlich gehen kann. Es ist genauer als Bilder, die inszeniert und bearbeitet sein können”, sagt Tara.

Neben Videoanrufe, nutzt Tara auch Instant Messaging, um mit Kollegen und Lieferanten zu kommunizieren und Meetings einzurichten.

“Es ist eine nette Art und Weise zu kommunizieren, weil man sehen kann, wenn gerade ein Text eingeben wird, ganz als würde man sich SMS schicken, was viel persönlicher als E-Mails ist. Und man kann Emoticons verwenden!  Ich liebe die Skype Emoticons. Sie sind so voller Persönlichkeit. Wenn ich einen Favoriten wählen müsste, würde ich den “Nicken” Kerl sagen (Nod). Und dann das Warten! Ein … (Wait).”

Tara hat zwei weitere Lieblings Skype-Funktionen: Skype WiFi, auf das sie angewiesen ist – und es ein Lebensretter für sie ist, da es mehr als 2 Millionen Hotspotstandorte rund um den Globus gibt – und Screen-Sharing. Sie findet es sehr praktisch den Bildschirm übertragen zu können, da der Designer in Denver lebt, For The Love Of Travel aber seinen Sitz in Los Angeles hat.

“Ich bin ziemlich nervig, insbesondere dann, wenn es um das Design geht. Daher nutzen wir die Skype Bildschirmfreigabe, um zusammen an Änderungen zu arbeiten, anstatt 100 Versionen hin und her zu schicken”, erklärt sie. “Es spart eine Menge Zeit und E-Mail-Speicherplatz. Ich kenne keinen vergleichbaren Weg, um auf einem anderen Computer zu schauen, wenn man nicht direkt danebensteht! ”

Während Tara bereits Italienisch und Französisch (und Grundkenntnisse in Deutsch) spricht, ist sie fasziniert vom Skype Translator. Sie brauchte ihn zwar bisher noch nicht, aber zieht ihn für die Zukunft in Betracht.

“Es klingt unglaublich! Ich kann es nicht abwarten, ihn auszuprobieren.”

Für Tara bleibt es unglaublich wichtig für die jungen Menschen, verschiedene Kulturen beobachten zu können, um sich an einem breiteren globalen Dialog beteiligen zu können.

“Es ist schwierig, eine Reise in Ausland mit Freunden zu planen und nicht jeder fühlt sich dabei wohl, alleine ins Ausland zu gehen. Zeitgleich sind Gruppenreisen dafür berüchtigt ein sehr durchgeplantes, tourihaftes Gefühl zu bieten. Das funktioniert einfach nicht um meine Generation anzusprechen”, sagt Tara. “Also habe ich damit angefangen, Reisen zu planen, die die Menschen eine Kultur vorstellen und nicht nur eine touristische Strecke ablaufen. Ich will, dass die Menschen eine Kultur erfahren können, auch wenn sie nur eine Woche dafür Zeit haben.
